Park Chan-wook Leads Star-Studded Jury as Cannes 2026 Opens

South Korean Cinema Takes Center Stage

The 79th Cannes Film Festival kicked off with South Korean director Park Chan-wook presiding over a nine-member jury tasked with selecting the prestigious Palme d'Or winner from 22 competing films. Known for his baroque filmmaking style, Park first gained international recognition when his film "Oldboy" won the Grand Prize at Cannes in 2004, later returning with "Thirst" (2009), "The Handmaiden" (2016), and "Decision to Leave," which earned him the best director award in 2022.

The distinguished jury includes Hollywood actress Demi Moore, Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård, Irish actress Ruth Negga, and screenwriter Paul Laverty, among others. Opening Night Celebrates Cinema's Past and Future

Pierre Salvadori's period romantic comedy-drama "The Electric Kiss" served as the festival's opening film, premiering out of competition on May 12. Set in 1928 Paris, the film follows a grieving painter who turns to alcohol and attempts to contact his deceased wife through a psychic after losing his artistic inspiration.

The opening ceremony featured a special moment when Elijah Wood presented an honorary Palme d'Or to his "Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson, who appeared genuinely surprised by the recognition. The festival will also honor Barbra Streisand with an honorary Palme d'Or during the festivities.
