Finn's Take· TL;DRMass displacement across Lebanon has forced nearly 700,000 people – including around 200,000 children – from their homes , as Israel's military campaign against Hezbollah enters its second week. 84 children have been killed and more than 667,000 people displaced , according to UN agencies, marking one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the region's recent history.
Lebanon has turned its largest sports venue, the Camille Chamoun Stadium in Beirut, into a displacement centre. On Monday, families sifted through boxes of donated clothes, pulling out coats and sweaters to help them bear the cold weather. Tents have gone up across the city. The displacement rate is outpacing levels from the 2023-24 war, when over one million people fled their homes.
The current conflict began when Hezbollah launched strikes on Israel in response to the killing of Iranian supreme leader Ali Khamenei during the broader US-Israel war against Iran. The Israeli military has ordered people out of the southern suburbs, a swathe of south Lebanon, and parts of the eastern Bekaa Valley region - all areas that have served as political and security strongholds of Hezbollah.
Israel may "redraw the demographic map" of Lebanon to try and pressure Hezbollah and sever the connection between the group and its support base , according to analysts. The number of people killed in Lebanon since Israel renewed widespread attacks on the country last Monday now stands at 570. At least 1,444 people have also been wounded , with casualties mounting daily.
The Lebanon crisis represents just one front in a broader Middle Eastern conflict. US forces have struck more than 5,000 targets in Iran since Saturday , while Iran's deputy health minister says more than 1,255 people have been killed and 12,000 wounded in nine days of US-Israeli attacks on Iran . The U.S. military said seven American servicemembers have been killed during operations connected to the war with Iran.
Iran has launched strikes across nine countries in the region: Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The conflict has disrupted global energy markets and forced diplomatic evacuations across the region.
The scale of displacement in Lebanon threatens to reshape the country's demographic and political landscape permanently. More than 1 million people were forced to flee their homes in Lebanon during a war between Hezbollah and Israel in 2024 , but many had returned before this latest escalation.
As winter conditions worsen and shelter capacity reaches its limits, the humanitarian crisis may force fundamental changes in how Lebanon manages its relationship with Hezbollah. The international community faces mounting pressure to broker a ceasefire before the displacement becomes permanent, potentially altering the region's balance of power for generations to come.
